The Shaffenhausen boys have made it.

A four door, front engine Porsche. A big (family sports car or as they prefer to call it GT Grand Tourer.Grand it is - almost 5 meters long, two meters wide and weighing two metric tons.

This automotive meisterstuck comes with a glorious name: Panamera (not Panamerican the defunct the airline which last flight was over Lockerby - before being blown to smitherees).

The Porsche Panamera's name pays homage to Porsche's successes in the famously rigorous and Carrera Panamericana road race, which was held annually in Mexico from 1950-'54.

As you oogle the Panamera from the front or rear, it's obviously a Porsche in its proportions and details. Reeking of Porsche DNA. German super car charecter. Design boss Michael Mauer says

that's because it has no predecessor, so it has to stake out its turf immediately.

The entry model comes with a 400-horsepower 4.8-liter V8.
The four-door Panamera GT (Grand Tourer) top version is equipped with a high perforamance 500 hp V8 engine twin turbo motor in front and thus room for plenty of luggage under its bulbous, sloping rear hatch.

Previous Porsches always were rear engine designed and with minimal luggage room. This is a blue blood German "Autobahn Stormer", par excellence. A Grand Tourer built for speeds up 300 kph provided there is enough straight tarmac. And no speed limits!

Inside the oplulent cabin which is equipped with all the bells and whistles: a multifunction touchscreen, and dual-zone climate control is standard, with a four-zone system available as an option.

The driver gets a center-mounted tachometer and a passel of console buttons for managing a multitude of functions. Behind the front seats are a pair of rear seats divided by a console. The seats easily accommodate tall people and can be equipped with power adjustments as well as heated and ventilated functionality.

Unusually for a ultra luxury salon, the Panamera's seatbacks fold forward to create a flat cargo floor and about 1.2 square meter loading area. For mega shopping sprees at Beverly Hill's Rodeo Drive.

In this exclusive segment, it all comes down to personal preference. Large Teutonic luxury sedans from Mercedes-Benz S-Klass and BMW 7-Series might have the edge in traditional passenger-oriented comfort, and the Italian Maserati Quattroporte outdoes the Porsche with its classically beautiful lines.

But the Porsche Panamera combines luxury-sedan accoutrements and exceptional performance in a single package unlike any other luxury sport sedan ever before Porsche will become VW’s 10th brand in its portfolio, along with Audi, Bentley and Skoda.

Volkswagen is also a major shareholder in two of the continent’s biggest truck makers: Scania AB of Sweden and MAN AG of Germany.

The Porsche Panamera, the company’s first sedan, was recently unveiled at this week’s annual Concourse d’Elegance car show in Pebble Beach, California.

“This is the perfect stage to roll out this extraordinary car,” said Detlev von Platen, President and CEO, Porsche Cars North America. “Everywhere you look there is a spectacular California backdrop and the entire week is devoted to thousands of auto enthusiasts celebrating the beauty of classic automobiles, both new and old.”

The Panamera GT will go on sale at the Porsche's 202 U.S. dealers/ showrooms on October 17, 2009.

Sticker price: USD 89,800 to more than USD 132,000.

“First and foremost, the Panamera is a true Porsche,” said von Platen. “It is a race bred car that you can now share with three other people in incredible comfort and class.”

Driving impressions of the car haven’t been logged yet by the leading auto testing magazines. But one criticism of the design so far is a bulbous back end roof-line, which were specifically designed to create a comfortable rear-seat space for full-sized adults.

And the Panamera tag-line, the slogan: "Four, uncompromised," meaning: " four doors, four seats and uncompromised — unlike others who say they are sports sedans. Detlev von Platen concluded as he was leaning on the Meteor Grey Metallic Panamera. A Porsche with four doors.
