So it was MOTOR-EXPO again! Shiny, brand new cars everywhere including the ubiquitous pretty presenters, choreographed dancers and slick MC's.
The annual end of the year MotorExpo kicked off at Challenger Hall outside Bangkok and continued until the 12th of December. Almost two weeks of serious slammin 'the doors and kickin' the tires (and signing the order books, too.)
This year advance automobile bookings at the Impact Muang Thong Thani Motor Expo reached 33,058 units, beating last year's record of 25,220 said Kwanchai Paphatphong, the car & accessory event organizing committee chairman.
"This year's Motor Expo proved a tremendous success, reflecting the potential of the event and its appropriate timing," he added.
The 12-day exhibition extravaganza, which ended on Sunday, sold 13,058 more vehicles than the conservatively set target of 20,000 enjoying a jump of 7,838 unit sales from 2009. "Car bookings this year are the highest in the 27 years of the event being organized by Inter-Media Consultant Co., Ltd." Mr Kwanchai said.
The annual MotorExpo, which serves as the final auto purchasing event of the year as car companies offer attractive promotions to reap year-end sales, generated sales of 36.1 billion THB worth of new and used vehicles and pick-up trucks, accessories and audio-visual equipment. The best-selling brands this year were TOYOTA (8,309 units or 25.1 % of bookings), HONDA (3,919 units, 11.9 %), ISUZU (2,902 units, 8.8%), NISSAN (2,879 units, 8.7%), MAZDA (2,727 7.2 %) MITSUBISHI (1,930 units, 5.8%), CHEVROLET (1,681 units, 5.1%), FORD (1,232 units, 3.7%), PROTON (1,173 units, 3.5%) and HYUNDAI (832 units, 2.5%).
The two week event was attended by 1.7 million visitors an increase by 6.4% from last year.
In neighboring Burma a tour guide once said "here in Myanmar (Burma) we have more temples than cars". Here in the Kingdom of Thailand it is the opposite. No wonder Thailand is called "Detroit of Asia" as this automobile obsessed Monarchy today builds and exports more pick up trucks than the United States of America, the country that invented the factory-assembled pickup: the Ford Model T Runabout with Pickup Body in 1928.
